Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Apr 29, 2020, sent to the company May 18, 2020, published by CPSC Jun 2, 2020
The product, in the report: Massager
The consumer indicates that when she was about to turn her massager on, it exploded and sparked on her stomach, leaving her a stomach burn slightly larger than a coin quarter. The consumer also received an electrical shock right before the explosion; the unit switched off the circuit breaker as well. The consumer unplugged the unit immediately after.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer via e-mail explaining the situation and is awaiting a response.
The consumer states the product was used two to three times monthly for about two to five minutes each use. The consumer states that the massager works only when it is plugged into a wall however she unplugs it after every use.
The consumer plans on keeping the massager for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.
I did end up seeking medical attention from my doctor on April 30, 2020.
Also, after the shock I received, when I looked at my stomach it was completely black in the location of my burn.

Was using the handheld massager and it all of a sudden made an exploding noise with a puff of smoke and the cords were almost fully detached at the base of the handle. No injuries were sustained, there was a black charcoal smudge on the hand that was holding it. We have the model PA-MH-THP. I went on Google to see if it has happened to anyone else and became aware that the product has been recalled for this very reason.

The product, in the report: HoMedics electric, hot and cold white and grey, hand held massager with 9 attachments.
On the evening of Friday, May 4, 2018 I was using a model HHP-250-THP, HoMedics hand-held, electric massager. Without warning, there was a loud “pop” and a bright flash of light, followed by a burning smell. I was not harmed and I turned off the massager immediately. I noticed that the electric cord was singed black where it enters the massager body. Also, some of the cord insulation in that same area had been burned away, revealing some of the cord’s wires. I should mention that this massager was about two years old. Also, about six months ago, the speed adjuster stopped working properly. The massager would work at only about half speed even though the adjuster was set at full speed. Sometimes, it would cycle back and forth between half and full speed without the speed adjuster being changed. I have already contacted HoMedics on line and, as per their instructions, submitted a coupon request so I can order a new massager.

The product, in the report: Percussion massager
I own a Homedics model WV 100H percussion massager. The a/c cord depending on the position of the massager turns off while using it. By changing the position of the unit, the power will turn back on and begin working again.
I noticed on the Homedics website that there is a recall for the identical reason, although my model number is NOT included in the recall.
I’m not sure if Homedics is aware of this problem since it is an older model. My concern is being shocked when using the massager.

On September 4, 2017, a child was using a HoMedics massager, Model No. HPP-375H, in the living room of his home. The submitter said a few weeks ago he noticed that the copper wiring was exposed near the base, where the cord and handle connect. The submitter said the massager still worked.
The submitter contacted the firm and informed them of the issue. The submitter was told that his massager was not included in recall # 17-144 and he should contact the place of purchase for a replacement. The submitter contacted the retailer and they provided him with a replacement.
The submitter indicated that he used the massager everyday.
The submitter believes the massager has the same defect as the recalled units and it should be included.

The product, in the report: hand held palm percussion massager for back
I use a hand held palm percussion massager by HoMedics. I have had it for years but only use it sporadically to massage my back. It is model number MT-PA. This past week I used it to massage my back. A couple of days ago, I turned it on and it made a large popping noise and sparks flew. There was black residue on my hand but no injuries. I left it out in the garage. Very frightening incident.

The product, in the report: Homedics Handheld Massager, Model PA-MH-THP, all-gray (NOT white and gray). These ALL-GRAY massagers were the PA-MH-THP models being produced up through sometime in 2015, after which the PA-MH-THP models being produced where white on one side and gray on the other. These gray and white ones are being recalled - they need to recall the all-gray ones too.
The sheathing of the electrical cord breaks right where the cord enters the massager. This exposes the copper wiring, causing shorts/shocks. Sometimes the copper wiring also breaks, and when the broken ends touch there is a large spark/flash. I’ve had 5-6 of these massagers (Homedics PA-MH-THP, the all-gray ones - NOT the ones that are gray on one side and white on the other, that are currently under recal) over the last several years, and every single one has done this. I still have at least 4 and cover the cord entry area with electrical tape.

The product, in the report: Homedics percussion massager model #PA-MHA-THP color; grey on white
I have owned several of the Home Medic percussion massagers over the years they were always fairly well made and lasted a long time, so I purchased another. The changes to the product this time were obvious and not impressive, you can tell by the lack of power and the effort to make the product lighter and cheaper, especially the smaller gauge power cord! But we went ahead and used it anyway because I just don’t have time to hassle with stuff over the internet. What a joke, after maybe 6 total hours of use; I was using it on my shoulder, I heard a loud pop, saw sparks, felt a burn on my wrist, and heard my AC circuit breaker click off, in that order, almost simultaneously! The burn on my arm was minor and gratefully because I engineered the AC electrical in my home better than the morons who engineered this massager, there was no damage to my system. The worse part is, what if it had been one of my kids or an elderly individual? What if it had caught something on fire? This kind of irresponsible thought process is what has and will continue to destroy everything good and descent. Some idiot sitting at a desk decides he needs to make more profit; “ lets give it a little smaller motor, or a smaller / lighter case ( the Millennial’s will like it especially if it looks cooler ), oh and lets use 18 gauge power cable instead of 16 ( the most important part that carries juice to the whole thing! ) and of course to hell with the consequences because we make more money!” Well here’s a thought process; in the past I have personally owned 13 Home Medics products and my extended family has and does own about 37 more. After this do you think we will ever buy anything else with that name on it?

The product, in the report: HHP-375H model Handheld Dual Node Percussion Massager with Heat. This is a handheld massager for use on large muscles/joints.
HHP-375H model Handheld Dual Node Percussion Massager with Heat. I had this massager plugged in to the wall socket and was using it on my right knee. This was perhaps the 4th or 5th time I had used the product. Suddenly there was a loud crackling noise and a spark from the area where the cord attaches to the massager. It startled me and as I was trying to maneuver my hand so I could shut it off, the same area sparked again even more violently and smoke came from the handle. Fortunately, it tripped the circuit breaker which shut off the massager. The cord actually came apart at the joint to the handle and was completely severed. I was not injured, however I usually use the massager in bed which could have been a disaster.

I originally ordered this massager on November 10, 2016 from Amazon. I used it for a few weeks with no issues. One night though as I was massaging my husband’s back, I got zapped very hard with an electric shock and sparks flew at the same time from the base of the cord that attaches to the massager. I was left with several red spots on my hand where the sparks had landed on me. Obviously we stopped using it immediately and I looked at it and wires were exposed and the plastic or rubber around those wires was slightly melted and burned. It took several days for my burns to go completely away, but they did heal up completely. I contacted Amazon and they said to return that product and they would send a replacement. We got the replacement on December 23, 2016. I honestly haven’t used it though because I’ve been so scared of getting shocked and burned again.

The product is a Homedics Massager model hhp-375h.
On Feb 19, 2017 I was using it to massage my back. The product was purchased new only 3 months ago from Macys and used only occasionally for personal use.
On this occasion, the product made a loud pop and bright flash of light. My hand felt burning and there was smoke. After I jumped away, I saw that the power cord was burned where it enters the device handle. I immediately pulled out the power cord from the wall to prevent possible fire or electrocution. Upon closer examination, I saw that the power cord had a short circuit where it enters the handle and the insulation was burned through. Fortunately I was wearing sweat shirt at the time and it had a hole burned through it in the back. Unfortunately it was my new sweat custom shirt. I have photographs taken at the time of incident.

I used a Homedics SP-5-THP Shiatsu Massage Pillow and it ripped my back open. I contacted Homedics and they offered to inspect the unit and find the root cause of the incident. They provided a shipping label and I sent it off to them and emailed a photo of my back. At that time I told them that there was nothing I wanted to do or to have done since I wanted the root cause analysis done first (no need getting another one if that one would just do the same thing to me). I waited a month for them to respond then sent a follow-up email. They never replied so, a month later (Tuesday of last week) I called them to ask if the analysis was complete. They told me that since I didn’t ask for anything, they had just thrown the unit away. I pressed them about it and they admitted that a root cause analysis had been done, but that I would not be allowed to see the results.
I believe I was using the product as directed.
At this point Homedics, Inc has simply dismissed me. I have not been offered a refund or replacement and they implied that no further action will be taken on this matter.

Just bought a Homedics neck massager with heat. Tried it for the first time tonight and I feel like I got a sudden zap of heat or radiation? to the left side of my neck. Was terrible and it still feels hot to that side. Will never use this product again. It feels like a minor burn and I barely used it ten minutes. ETA: 1 hour later- still hurting. I think I received a very minor burn to the back of the neck.
