I am reporting a potential consumer-product safety hazard involving a Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System, model HD430, color Stone, manufactured by SharkNinja. The product was purchased from Amazon, ASIN B0B89P16MC. It is a 1300-watt, 120-volt hair dryer and multi-styler with three airflow speeds.
On June 20, 2026, I used the product during normal intended hair-drying and styling use, in close proximity to my head and ears. During a 30-second recorded session, I cycled through all airflow settings, including the three-dot maximum airflow setting. Because the product is designed for use near the ears, I performed a preliminary sound-level screening measurement using the [REDACTED] mobile app on an [REDACTED]. The phone was positioned at approximately the same ear-level distance and orientation as during normal use. The app was set to A-weighting, Fast response time (0.2 seconds), and +0.0 dB calibration.
The 30-second recording showed an average/Leq of 104.1 dB(A), a maximum reading of 116.2 dB, and a peak reading of 119.3 dB. The highest peak occurred while the product was operating on the three-dot maximum airflow setting. These are smartphone-app screening measurements, not certified sound-level-meter measurements. However, they raise a serious concern that this product may expose consumers to potentially excessive noise during normal intended use near the ears. This report concerns a potential noise-exposure and hearing-injury risk, including possible ear pain, tinnitus, temporary hearing changes, disorientation, or other auditory injury.
I did not see a clear warning regarding hearing damage, noise exposure limits, hearing protection, product decibel output, or safe exposure duration. After using the product, I experienced ear ringing, difficulty hearing clearly, and disorientation associated with reduced hearing clarity after use. I stopped using the product after observing these readings and symptoms. I have retained the product, packaging, Amazon purchase information, model number, UPC, and screenshots documenting the measurement settings and results, including A-weighting, +0.0 dB calibration, NIOSH dosimeter settings, 104.1 dB(A) average/Leq, 116.2 dB maximum, and 119.3 dB peak (peak occured right when 3 dot maximum airflow was pressed).
I request that CPSC investigate this with the Shark FlexStyle HD430 presents a potential excessive-noise exposure or hearing-injury hazard during normal intended use. I request independent sound-output testing at realistic consumer ear-distance conditions, including maximum airflow settings, and evaluation of whether warnings, decibel-output disclosure, safe-use or exposure-duration guidance, labeling changes, corrective action, or other consumer protections are warranted.
