While drying my hair this morning, flames/sparks/fire (it happened quickly!) started coming out of my hair dryer at the base. This resulted in burning my hand. My hair dryer is definitely less than 5 years old, but I do not have the original packaging or receipt to verify the purchase date.

The product, in the report: Vidal Sassoon Hair dryer Red
On July 10 the I sat down on the side of my bed to dry my hair. Picked up my hair dryer . Had the plug in my left hard and the dryer in my right hand. Plugged it in switched it on and sparks and flames shot out of the bottom of the hair dryer burning my hand and inner wrist. I still had my hand near the plug so I unplugged it right away. I kind of blew out the flame and ran to my back door and played it on the back porch to make sure it was out.
Came back inside washed off my hand and arm to see what injury I had. It had burned so deep that it burned the blister off my wrist. I applied burn cream and wrapped it up . I always inspect cords to make sure they are not broken or frayed. And I never wrap my cords around my appliances. This was a Vidal Sassoon Hair dryer. They since have been taken over by [REDACTED]. I have been in contact with the appliance Dept at Helen of Troy. They had me mail the dryer to them for inspection. Consumers need to be aware or this danger. I was told a elderly lady in my passed away in a house fire because of a hair dryer. Haven’t heard if it was the same kind. I do know they did start making them different where the cord goes into the bottom by the way my new one is made. Not sure how old my other one was but I have always had really short hair so I never use it very long at a time if at all on a daily basis. Thanks for your time.

The product, in the report: Revlon 1875 Watts hair dryer in teal. This product is at least 7 years old. I do not have the model number. Was not able to upload my pictures - uploader just freezes for me.
My hair dryer started on fire when sitting on the bathroom counter. It was plugged in, but not on. NO one was in the house and it had not been used for a couple of days. Luckily the counter is granite, so nothing else in the bathroom burned - but the odor of burning plastic has permeated the house and remains.
Half of the hair dryer is gone. The plug and cord are intact - no breaks or damage. The GFI outlet in the bathroom did not trip. There had been no prior issues with the hair dryer.

The product, in the report: Hair dryer
We purchased a Helen of Troy Professional Gold Series Ceramic hair dryer in November 2015. In August 2016 the dryer began shooting flames out the end. My wife immediately stopped using the dryer for fear that it would set her hair on fire. We contacted the company two times at different email contact addresses listed on their web site but received no reply.

The product, in the report: 1875 Watt Hot Shot Tools Pink Translucent Ionic Ceramic Hair Dryer
While blow drying my hair, I suddenly noticed a burning odor. I was blow drying my hair upside down with my eyes closed. When I opened my eyes and looked at my blow dryer, I noticed a bit of smoke coming out of the handle, and suddenly a spark and a snap, and the blow dryer stopped and I immediately dropped the blow dryer on the floor. The GFI plug nor the GFI outlet tripped. I saw at the base of the handle the cord was shredded and bare wires were burned. I have never had something like this happen to a blow dryer.

The cord of the hair dryer made a large, visible smoking spark when in use, approximately 2 inches from where the cord attaches to the handle of the dryer. The spark was enough to cause a burn whole through my shirt and caused a burn blister on my breast.

The product, in the report: Helen of Troy Silver Flash 1875 Watts Hair Dryer.
While drying my hair last Thursday morning the hair dryer stopped working, I reached down to check to see if the plug came undone and the dryer started again. For a moment I smelled an electrical burn and them the handle spouted sparks and fire! I immediately dropped the hair dryer and unplugged it. As a result I had minor burns on my hand and because I had a ring on I had burns on my fingers where the metal heated up. My fingernail polish was melted off half way up my nail beds and two of my fingernails broke later than day. The skin under my nails has been very sore and tender since. Later the skin peeled of the palm of my hand. Also and this might be the worst thing, my hair was singed and I now need to get a new hair cut!!! My family told me that the lights in the house dimmed and they heard a funny sound besides my screams!

Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 28, 2013, sent to the company Feb 11, 2013, published by CPSC Feb 26, 2013
The product, in the report: Helen of Troy Professional thermal hot air brush
Saturday morning, 1/26/2013, I was drying my hair about 7:15 a.m. using my approx. 6-month old Helen of Troy tangle-free thermal hot air brush. It takes about 20 minutes to dry my hair, and I usually read the paper or a book while running the brush through my hair. I just turn my hair under so it’s pretty easy to use. My hair was almost dry when I noticed white globs caught in the curls. I was trying to figure out what they were when I looked down at the hair dryer and noticed that there was a large hole melted into the plastic brush. I immediately turned off and unplugged the dryer; the brush and tip were burning hot to my touch. I think in another second or so my hair might have caught fire. I worked to free what I realized were parts of the brush that had melted in my hair. I do feel very lucky not to have been injured, though I tore some hair pulling out the plastic bits. I was going to a meeting so I plugged in a different brush dryer and finished my hair.
I’ve taken pictures of the flecks in my hair that remained last night after removing most everything else. I also took pictures of the hair dryer.
I think the dryer overheated but the reset button did not shut it down.
I’ve used dryers like this for many years, and during this time have gone through seven or eight of the lower-cost [REDACTED] models. These do overheat and will shut down until they’ve cooled down. If they do that several times, it’s my cue to toss the dryer and replace it with another from my stock (several years ago I bought about ten [REDACTED] dryers on sale at WalMart, but I haven’t found them there in years).
However, the Helen of Troy is a Professional model and had never shut off/overheated during the six months or so I’ve owned it. I liked it very much. In the last week, however, I had noticed that the plastic had become discolored, and I had planned to take off the roller brush this weekend to clean it. The only hair product I use is [REDACTED] shampoo (I don’t even use hair spray) so there was nothing new in my routine that might have caused the discoloration.
Since this is a relatively new -- just six months old -- dryer, I am wondering whether what happened to me might happen to some other user if this is a design and/or production flaw.

The product, in the report: 1875 Ionic Ceramic Blowing Dryer
Caller was unable to hold onto her blow dryer due to extreme heat coming into the handle.
She was blow drying her very short hair around July 11, 2012 however, after only five minutes the heat became unbearable and she had to turn it off and put it down. There were no flames just extreme heat.
She has not contacted the manufacturer but does intend to contact them.
She is positive that the blow dryer would have caught fire if she had not turned it off quickly.
Caller would like to have this blow dryer investigated, recalled and replaced at manufacturer expense.
