No one hurt Made Sep 20, 2026, sent to the company Sep 24, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 8, 2026
The product, in the report: Brush
I am reporting a severe product malfunction and fire hazard involving a Cortex hair dryer brush.
During only my second time using the device, it began to emit a strong, burning chemical odor, and the plastic components around the bristles began to visibly melt while in operation. The extreme heat and the melted plastic elements caused direct physical damage to my hair, leaving a significant portion of it severely burnt and broken.
The device overheated catastrophically under normal operating conditions. It poses an immediate risk of fire, electrical shock, and personal injury to consumers.

Hospital admission Made May 5, 2025, sent to the company May 7, 2025, published by CPSC May 21, 2025
The product, in the report: Black and silver 13 inch tall x 3.5inch wide (at widest part) blowout brush
On the morning of May 5, 2025, while using my Cortex Beauty Blowout Brush to dry my hair, flames suddenly shot out from the base of the brush near where the cord attaches. The plastic in that area and part of the cord extension melted almost instantly. I immediately unplugged the device. Thankfully, I was not injured, and there was no damage to my property or hair, but the experience was extremely alarming. The brush is no longer functional.
The brush had been used normally no water exposure or modifications and while the cord was slightly twisted from regular use, it was not visibly frayed or damaged. I purchased it new through FabFitFun between Spring 2022 thru Summer 2023, and it was used occasionally, not daily. Given that this happened during normal use and the flames appeared without warning, I am very concerned about the fire risk this product may pose to others.
I have already contacted both Cortex Beauty and FabFitFun about this safety issue. I am reporting this incident to the CPSC to ensure it is properly documented and investigated.
