Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

My hair dryer just burst on fire. I can send the hair dryer to you. It is an Andis, Model HD-10L set to 1200 watts. Flames came from the area around the Hi/Lo/Off switch. They stopped when I pulled the plug from the wall socket. The internal circuit breaker did not shut off.

Product is an Andis 33805 MT-12 hair dryer purchased from Amazon in February 2020 and used two to three times a week since then.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009XH6V4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

The product was left plugged into a 120V AC wall socket while not in use and was not being used when the incident occurred. Today, we heard a noise like a hair dryer running in the bathroom when no one was in the bathroom. We found the hair dryer running and smoking with scorch marks around the switch.

Fortunately, no one was injured. We were lucky we were home, as if it caught fire it would have ignited nearby flammable materials, such as towels and cabinets, and potentially burned the house down if we weren’t there to unplug it when the incident occurred.

The product, in the report: Red Andis Elevate Tourmaline Ionic Hair Dryer

Using an Andis Elevate Ionic Hair Dryer at 6:45AM 1/18/13: Turned on unit and within 5 minutes of use it made a bang sound and the right side of the unit approximately 2x3 inches blew out, with shattered plastic pieces of plastic and metal following that. I unplugged the unit immediately but it did continue to run before I did unplug it and there was a smell of burning. Luckily I was drying the right side of my head so when the right side of the unit exploded the pieces hit the bathroom door and not my eye and head. Had I been drying the left side, I’d not be here today typing this and it would have at minimum cut my head open and possibly taken my left eye out. I took pictures of the unit with a measuring tape for scale and the parts that blew out of it. Scraps of broken pieces are still inside the unit and I’ve contacted the manufacturer by email. Their office is in the midwest and was closed by the time I got off of work on Friday - I live on the west coast.

The product, in the report: Andis Elevate Dryer 1875 Watt, this was the upgrade provided by the manufacturer after the failure of the first two units.

This is a DANGEROUS product. I have experienced three separate units fail by electrical fire within each unit’s 1 year warranty.

I was using my blow dryer when I noticed that I was having problem turning the switch on and off, the handle was heating up and then I saw flames and smoke. I unplugged the blow dryer. The item continued to smolder. I removed it from my home due to the smoldering wires.

This is the THIRD dryer from ANDIS COMPANY where I have experienced an electrical malfunction and smoke/spark/flames. I have used this item for personal use and less than 10 minutes per day. I have used in different homes so know my home wiring is not contributing to the problem. I reported the problem each time to the manufacturer and requested a replacement. I returned the defective units hoping they were trouble shooting the problem. This third failure shows the Manufacturer has not corrected the reported defect.

I purchased the first unit on 1/23/10. It was a Model MI-5 1875 Watt Ceramic Hair Dryer. I returned it to the company after it “burned out” with sparking and smoking. This unit was replaced by the company on 1/13/11.

The second unit was another MI-5 Dryer. It too “burned out” with sparking and smoking on 10/28/11. I returned to ANDIS and they replaced with their top of the line MI-5 Elevate Dryer which they shipped out the same day. This dryer last only 6 months before the failure described above.

The product, in the report: Elevate by Andis - Tourmaline Ionic Hairdryer. Burgandy Red color

Using Ionic hairdryer “Elevate by Andis” and the hairdryer exploded with a bang, the fan blade, back of the dryer and handle shattered and were scattered across the room. The hairdryer remained on, with a quiet wurring noise but with the smell of burning. Immediately unplugged the applicance. The appliance has a built in shock protector built into the cord but it did not automatically shut off.
