The product, in the report: Oceanic Biocube 14g aquarium http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=18538&ref=4032&subref=AA&cmpid=PPC-G-4032 BioCube 14 Aquarium Volume: 14.3 gallons Dimensions: 15” x 15-1/2” x 17” high 48 watt canopy lighting includes: (1) 24 watt True Actinic 03 Blue straight pin (1) 24 watt 10,000K Daylight straight pin (2) 0.75 watt Lunar Blue-Moon-Glow LED Pump flow rate: 137 gph
On my Oceanic 14 gallon biocube aquarium top, I removed the hood to replace both lights in it. I unplugged the unit from the outlet to replace the lights. After replacing the lights in the hood, I connected the ballasts connectors to the electrical cord unit (unit is still unplugged from wall at this time). I then connected the electrical plug into the wall outlet. No lights came on. I turned the light on the hood and that is when the ballast caught fire with a blue fire about 1” shooting out of one of the ballasts.
My husband unplugged the unit from the power. I then removed the hood canopy. There are fire burns to our stereo speaker system that was next to the ballast when it was on fire. Additionally, on the ballast connector, there is a hole from the fire that was shooting out of it. Picture is included in this report.
My husband was watching the entire incident and can confirm what happened.
