The product, in the report: Marineland Stealth 150watt black aqurium heater, words on it are worn.
I had the Stealth - ML90451-00 in my fish tank, where it had been for months. I heard something hit the ceiling but paid no real attention to it as I was busy in a different room. A few mins later all I could smell throughout my home was burning plastic. I went into my living room to find black marks splatted all over the ceiling above the aquarium as well as the wall behind. I panicked and unplugged everything coming from the tank to find the inside part of the heater on the floor burning. Not pleased.

The product, in the report: Aquarium heater. Marineland Stealth model EPT250
I was changing the water in my 75 gallon aquarium.
I pulled the filter cartridge from my filter and the electric shock staggered me. Thinking it was the filter, I unplugged it and attempted to remove the cartridge. I was again staggered from the shock. Since the heater was the only other electric appliance in contact with the water I unplugged it and no more electric shock. I plugged the filter back in and no more shock.
A GOOGLE search revealed a product recall.

The product, in the report: 100 watt Aquarium Heater
Own Marineland Stealth 100. Noticed heater had stopped working and decided to remove it when I changed aquarium water. As I was changing the water the level dropped below the heater. Just after I removed my hand from the water there was a bright flash and loud electrical pop from the heater. Brown smoke then rose from the heater. I believe the flash and pop was from the heater shorting out. Luckily I was not touching anything wet and did not have my hand in the water or else I believe I would have been electrocuted. I believe the heater has an auto stop feature when the water level is below the minimum. I did not see the recall until I visited a pet store.

The product, in the report: Marine land stealth aquarium heater EPT250 250watt
I was called by my wife at work telling me that she could smell an electrical fire but could not see any smoke. She then called the fire dept who came out. There was no fire but a breaker had been flipped by my aquarium, and that is were the smell was coming from. We left the aquarium unplugged until I came home from work. I found that the electrical wire that attaches to my stealth marine-land aquarium heater had detached from the heaters base resulting in a live exposed wire in my aquariums water. I lost 4 smaller fish that were electrocuted in the incident. I have called the company and left them a message about the incident, as well as sending them an email 2 weeks ago but have not received a call back or response. I have since learned that there was a recall on the product in 2011.

The product, in the report: 250 Watt Marineland Stealth Heater
On April 29, 2012, I own an aquarium heater from Marineland which stay on continously raising the temperature of my aquarium from a normal 79F to 115F. Not only did this kill almost 90% of all my Corals and inhabitants, but the heater would not shut down and continuously making a sizzling noise. Had I not caught this any early, it would probably cause more damage and could result in a fire..

The product, in the report: Marineland aquarium heater, black plastic tube with a temperature nob on the top. Model: Stealth Pro 100 watt Model: Stealth Pro 100W HMA100 ML90450 Serial #: 01D32
I have been using a Marineland aquarium heater (Model: Stealth Pro 100 watt) for my 29-gallon aquarium at home since 2011. Last night (4/10/2012) it exploded by itself under normal conditions. The heater broke into several pieces and the force of its explosion broke the back of the glass aquarium. When I noticed it in the next morning, the back of the aquarium was almost gone. Only a few pieces of glass remained at the corners. Water has gone out and poured onto the wood floor of my living room. Almost all my fishes have also gone out with the water and died on the floor. Only three fishes were found alive at the bottom of the aquarium. Shatters of glasses and aquarium sand were everywhere on the floor. Water has soaked about 50% of the wood floor and a large portion of two rugs in my living room. Some water also went into my basement through one of the house heater outlets. While I was cleaning up the mess, I saw cupping and flaking of the wood floor at many places. I will file a warranty claim to the manufacture and will never use their product again.

The product, in the report: Marineland Stealth Pro Model 90453 250 Watt Submersible Heater
On March 30, 2012 I went on a camping trip. I fed my fish in my 55-gallon aquarium and noticed the water was at 78 degrees as normal per the digital temperature reader.
On April 1, 2012, I returned home from my trip to find all the fish in my 55-gallon aquarium were dead. I checked the digital temperature reader and noticed the water was 104 degrees.
After cleaning out all of the dead fish (upwards of 35), I performed a significant cleaning and water change. I decided to plug the Marineland Stealth Pro heater back in. Within 12 hours, the temperature jumped from 72 degrees to 94 degrees. I immediately unplugged the heater.
While researching the heater I discovered the recall. I registered the product after I purchased the product from Amazon on 9/29/2010. However, I never received any notice of an issue or recall with the heater.

The product, in the report: Marineland Visi-Therm Stealth Heater: 150 Watts - 13.75” Long
The Marineland Steath ETP150 heater was used for my 30 gallon saltwater aquarium. It was set at 75F degrees and instructions were followed at keeping the water above the minimum water line and not submersing the heater at the same time. One morning, I have noticed the temperature in the aquarium had exceeded 90F and everything in the fish tank, including fishes and corals, were dead. The water was a lot warmer than usual and I immediately disconnected the heater. The heater was actually hot to the touch and I have never used the heater since. I still have the heater because I packed it away and never had the time to throw it out. Damage is approximately $400-$500 worth of fishes and corals.

The product, in the report: Marineland Stealth Heater 200 watt model ETP200 Recall # 11-202
On December 2nd 2011 at around 4am I was alerted by the smoke alarms going off in my home as we slept. When. I got out of bed and opened the door I found a wall of smoke that immediately rushed into the bedroom. Not seeing any flames upstairs I rushed downstairs to find the top of my 46 gallon aquarium engulfed in flames to the ceiling and smoke so thick you couldn’t see more than a foot. I immediately started trying to extinguish the flame with a wet towel and removing the flaming cover from the aquarium and throwing out the back door just a couple feet away burning my entire right palm in the process. I managed to get all of the flames extinguished, made sure everyone and all animals made it out of the home then opened all doors and windows. We then called the fire department to come ensure that everything was safe to leave the home. The fire department indicated that the fire looked to have come from the left side of the aquarium. The only electrical component on that side was the heater. There was extensive smoke damage throughout the entire house ruining almost all personal belongings. I suffered third degree blisters on my right hand for weeks after the fire. The following week I contacted Marineland/United pet group in which they opened up an insurance claim through liberty mutual commercial insurance for the incident. Liberty Mutual conducted many fire investigations as well as a forensic engineering exam, all proving without a doubt that the heater was defective and in fact the cause of the fire due to an internal malfunction. Then two months after the fire Liberty Mutual and the parent company of Marineland, Spectrum Brands Inc denied my claim stating that the heater was manufactured by an Italian manufacturer and merely sold under their name in the united states, intern claiming that they have no liability for this recalled product. I feel this was very irresponsible and in fact an illegal decision. I filed a previous complaint through the cpsc on Dec 2nd but would like to file another to shed light on the irresponsibiliy of the company on a product that they know to be faulty that turned my life upside down. Also I wish to file an online report so that I can provide pictures to my report to help others. They seem to be on top of helping customers with minimal damage or replacements but when it comes to destroying everything you own and forcing you out of your home for over two months the well being of their customers and making things right is not in their best interest at all.

The product, in the report: Stealth aquarium heater model ETP250-250W
I have a Marineland Stealth ETP250-250W aquarium heater that malfunctioned. The cord came loose from the heater and killed all the fish in my marine tank. We noticed an electrical burning smell after this happened and I traced it back to the heater. I researched the heater and found that Marineland recalled the heater. I have been a firefighter for 30 years and realize that I am extremely lucky that this did not cause a more serious fire incident in my home! Substandard products like this kill people and burn down houses! Fortunately for me, I only lost a few hundred dollars worth of livestock.

I have 9 turtle aquariums that have all been using the Stealth Pro underwater heathers for approximately 1 year or just a little less. About 2 months ago, one of my 75 gallon tanks way overheated during the night. The turtle that lives in that tank is an approximately 7” water turtle. The water temperature in all my turtle’s tanks was normal when I turned off their lights for the night. (I check everything in all the tanks both morning & night to make sure all is OK.)The next morning when I turned on his lights he jumped off his basking platform into the water immediately began swimming back & forth frantically. Luckily I saw him do that & went to get him out to see what was wrong. During the night his water felt like it had heated to almost boiling. Luckily he spent the night out of the water on his basking platform. I was shocked when I put my hand in to get him. It scared me to think how long he was actually in that extremely high water temperature.

The product, in the report: 200 Watt black plastic aquarium heater
I just learned about this product recalled and requested a refund from the manufacturer. I then finished reading the recall notice and found the request at the bottom that asked incident reports.
The Marineland Steath Aquarium heaters thermostat failed and raised my marine aquariums temperature to 95* before the failure was detected. Many delicate corals in the tank were killed. The heater was being used as directed, and when the thermostat failed the heater continued to heat the tank water to lethal levels.

The product, in the report: Aquairum Heater: Marineland Stealth ETP150-150W
Marineland Stealth Aquarium Heater: ETP150-150 watts: I have had the heater for a couple of years. The heater has always been set at 75 degrees F, and never moved. Last week I noticed that my corals were all limp. I checked the tank temp and it was at 86 degrees F. I unplugged the heater, let it cool down and removed it. I iced the tank to slowly bring down the temp. I replaced it with another Marieland Stealth EPT-250-250 watts which I have as a back up (I have three Marineland Stealth heaters in all). Today, while at my local fish store I wanted to by another one and was told that there had been a recall and that I should check out Marinelands website. He told me that I should remove all three heaters. I did. The Marienland site had your link (disabled!), so I did a search and found that you would still like input. Now that I have read that there may be over 1 million of them out there, I am bothered that the retail distributers were not bound to post this recall/“warning” on their front door where all their customers could see it. Thank you. [redacted]

The product, in the report: 1 Marineland Stealth Pro Heater
I had a Marineland Stealth Pro heater for my 20 gal tank. I noticed it had started hissing one day and soon after, I noticed a bump on the heater rod. Soon after that, it looked like something was leaking from that same area so I took it out of my tank. It looks like it got too hot and blistered and its innards were leaking out. I have since lost 3 neon Tetras and a Glowlight Tetra for seemingly no reason (my water parameters were fine).
I called Marineland but never got an answer. I emailed them but never got an email back. Very disappointed with the company.
I just found out about this recall (9/18/11) so unfortunately I had replaced the Stealth Pro with a Stealth. The Stealth stopped working a couple of days ago -- not exploded, just not heating anymore. I woke up to find my tank at 72 degrees when it’s normally 85!

The product, in the report: steath pro marineland aquarium heater
we had a marineland stealth pro heater in our 90 gallon aquarium, that exploded today, Aug.7 2011 the heater shattered, killing most of the fish, and sending burnt glass all over the aquarium and water out of the top of the tank. everything in the tank was damaged, and it has taken over 12 hours to try to empty the tank. everything needs replacement. we needed to purchase a temporary tank and supplies, and will need to completely re do the original tank, fuses were blown in the home. we are only lucky our home did not catch fire. the tank is destroyed, fish are dead, our carpets are soaked, and needless to say, we are very upset.
