The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: 5-gallon aquarium kit

I recently purchased a 5-gallon aquarium made by Cambridge Aquatics, which I understand was a brand of PetEdge. The entire line of tanks appears to have been discontinued, although they are still being sold.

We had two goldfish in the aquarium. About a week after adding them, one — who, granted, was sick — got caught behind the tubing on the air pump. We got him loose, but he died within an hour. The next day, I discovered the tank leaking water all over the end table. In order to control the damage and save the surviving fish, I filled a fishbowl with some water from the tank, moved the fish into it, and drained the tank.

I bought a new tank (not by Cambridge Aquatics) the next day and, following the manufacturer’s instructions, conditioned the water and let the filter run for two days before very gradually acclimating and adding the fish. But he died a couple of days later. I believe he had the same illness as his tankmate, but had the leak not forced an emergency move, he probably could have recovered.

I did let the retailer know what happened, and he offered to replace the defective tank. I appreciated that, but had already bought a new tank and would never buy anything made by Cambridge Aquatics again. I contacted PetEdge, and they claimed that Cambridge Aquatics was not their brand. Information I found at trademarkia.com says that PetEdge did indeed register the trademark Cambridge Aquatics. The packaging and instructions say the aquarium comes with a two-year limited warranty.
