The product, in the report: BBC Grow and Discover Crystal Aquarium

The BBC Grow and Discover Crystal Aquarium kit is marketed as a STEM activity for children. It is composed of sodium metasilicate, which is dangerous dry and becomes a strong base (ph 12) when water is added. There is a warning on the box, but the plastic aquarium is poorly designed with no lid, making it very easy to spill. The product did spill in its entirety in our house, and my wife and I scrambled to sop it up before the strong base would destroy the varnish on our floors (the product insert says it will do so in 10 seconds of contact) and our electronics. Needless to say we had no time to look for rubber gloves. Both of us have very chapped skin on our hands, but thankfully none got in our eyes. I am an ophthalmologist, and I know that a splash to the eye with a strong base like this with could be blinding. It’s entirely inappropriate to market this product to children (or anyone) without a serious revision of the aquarium design to reduce the very high risk of spilling the product.
