Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.
What’s wrong with it?
IF THE WIRE INSULATION IS MELTED ENOUGH TO CREATE A SHORT, THE POTENTIAL FOR A FIRE EXISTS. THIS SHORT CAN ALSO OPEN THE CIRCUIT THAT CONTROLS ALL THE MARKER AND TAIL LIGHTS. IF THE TAIL AND MARKER LIGHTS GO OUT, THE VEHICLE COULD CAUSE A CRASH.
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS BUILT WITH CODE 16XWD (SUNSHADE OPTION CODE).
SOME WIRES IN THE SUNSHADE WIRE HARNESS HAD INSULATION THAT DID NOT MEET TEMPERATURE SPECIFICATIONS.
SOME HARNESSES HAVE BEEN FOUND TO HAVE ENOUGH MELTED INSULATION TO CREATE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT.

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
- This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
