The short answer

NHTSA received EVENFLO COMPANY, INC.’s report on May 11, 1998. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE BACKREST AND BASE WERE TO SEPARATE IN A VEHICLE CRASH, THE CHILD IN THE SEAT COULD BE INJURED.

EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: TWO-IN-ONE CAR SEATS, MODELS BEGINNING WITH 636 AND 637.

THE SEAT’S BACKREST AND BASE HAVE SEPARATED WHEN THE OCCUPANT IS RESTRAINED BY THE SEAT’S 5-POINT HARNESS.

THIS DOES NOT COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 213, “CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEMS.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
