The short answer

NHTSA received TRANS/AIR MANUFACTURING CORP.’s report on Aug 2, 1996. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

A DETERIORATING HOSE CAN CAUSE LEAKAGE OF THE POWER STEERING FLUID RESULTING IN A POSSIBLE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

A GENERAL MOTORS (GM) HOSE WHICH DIRECTS THE POWER STEERING FLUID FROM THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR TO THE POWER STEERING PUMP REQUIRED RELOCATION TO ACCOMMODATE THE AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR.

THE SUBSTITUTE HOSE WAS NOT COMPATIBLE FOR USE WITH POWER STEERING FLUID CAUSING THE HOSE TO DETERIORATE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
