The short answer

NHTSA received ALLIEDSIGNAL AUTOMOTIVE’s report on Apr 12, 1995. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

OIL WILL BE SPRAYED OUT ONTO THE BIKE AND/OR ROAD SURFACE CAUSING THE DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL AND INCREASE THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

THE DISTANCE FROM THE FIRST THREAD OF THE FILTER TO THE GASKET FACE IS APPROXIMATELY 0.405” AND IT SHOULD BE APPROXIMATELY 0.388”.

THIS DESIGN ONLY ALLOWS A FEW THREADS TO ENGAGE WHEN INSTALLING ON MOTORCYCLE AND CAN RESULT IN THE FILTER “BLOWING OFF.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
