The short answer

NHTSA received ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL’s report on Jan 18, 1995. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THE WHEEL MOUNTING STUDS CAN BREAK RESULTING INSEPARATION OF THE WHEEL FROM THE VEHICLE. VEHICLE STEERING AND BRAKING WILL BE REDUCED AND THE SEPARATED WHEEL WOULD CAUSE A HAZARD TO OTHERS ON THE HIGHWAY. EITHER EVENT CAN RESULT IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

THE MACHINING PERFORMED ON THE BRAKE DRUMS WILL NOT PERMIT THE DRUM TO SEAT FULLY AGAINST THE HUB FACE.

THE REDUCED BRAKE DRUM AND HUB CONTACT AREA WILL ABRADE AND FRET ALLOWING THE WHEEL MOUNTING JOINT TO LOOSEN.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
