The short answer

NHTSA received FLEETWOOD FOLDING TRAILER’s report on Sep 20, 1994. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

A BROKEN TRAILER AXLE CAUSES LOSS OF TRAILER CONTROL AND RESULTS IN A ACCIDENT.

INSUFFICIENT GREASE WAS APPLIED TO THE TRAILER AXLE HUB INNER BEARING CAUSING THE BEARING TO OVERHEAT DURING TOW OPERATIONS.

THE OVERHEATED BEARING CAN SEIZE TO THE AXLE SPINDLE CAUSING THE TRAILER AXLE HUB TO BREAK AT THE REAR SEAL FLANGE.

What should you do?

DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE TRAILER’S AXLE HUBS AND INSPECT THE INNER BEARINGS FOR SUFFICIENT GREASE AND ALSO INSPECT ALL RELATED AXLE PARTS SUCH AS BEARING RACES AND AXLE SPINDLE FOR WEAR. THE BEARINGS WILL BE REPACKED OR REPLACED IF NECESSARY AND NEW GREASE SEALS WILL BE INSTALLED. NOTE: IF THE VEHICLE IS PRESENTED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND THE REMEDY IS NOT PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME OR THE REMEDY DOES NOT CORRECT THE DEFECT, PLEASE CONTACT FLEETWOOD FOLDING TRAILER AT 1-800-544-8193. ALSO, CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-800-424-9393.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
