The short answer

NHTSA received AM GENERAL CORPORATION’s report on Sep 1, 1994. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

FUEL LEAKING INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAN RESULT IN A FIRE WHEN EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION. FAILURE OF THE ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP CAN CAUSE POOR PERFORMANCE AND POSSIBLE STALLING CREATING A ROAD HAZARD WHICH CAN RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.

THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT IS SEPARATED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT BY AN INSULATED ENGINE COVER.

THE INSULATION INSIDE THIS COVER CAN RUB AGAINST THE FUEL RETURN HOSE RESULTING IN A FUEL LEAK.

ADDITIONALLY, A WIRING HARNESS CAN ALSO WEAR THROUGH CAUSING INTERRUPTION TO SOME ELECTRICAL OPERATIONS, INCLUDING THE FUEL PUMP.

What should you do?

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE RUBBER FUEL LINE HOSE WITH A SOLID STEEL LINES AND ROUTE THE LINE TO PROVIDE ONE INCH OF CLEARANCE TO THE COVER. ALSO, THE WIRING HARNESS COVER WILL BE REPLACED AND THE WIRING REROUTED TO GAIN SUFFICIENT CLEARANCE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
