The short answer

NHTSA received INTERNATIONAL TRUCK AND ENGINE’s report on Aug 2, 1994. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

WHEN THIS OCCURS, ENGINE RUN-ON AND SUBSEQUENT LOSS OF OPERATOR CONTROL VIA THE NORMAL THROTTLE MECHANISM CAN OCCUR, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

FOUR COMPRESSION BACKPLATE RETAINING FASTENERS ON THE TURBO-CHARGER WERE TORQUED ONLY HAND TIGHT.

THIS ALLOWS THE FASTENERS TO LOOSEN, AND CAUSES OIL TO LEAK INTO THE COMPRESSOR AIR SIDE OF THE TURBO-CHARGER WHICH, WHEN COUPLED WITH THE HEAT PRECIPITATED BY THE COMPRESSOR AND THE MIXING ACTION OF THE COMPRESSOR WHEEL, CAN RESULT IN AN AIR/OIL MIXTURE THAT FUELS THE ENGINE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
