The short answer

NHTSA received OHLIN RACING AB’s report on May 16, 1994. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THE DEFORMED VALVE SEAT CAUSES INCREASED FRICTION FORCECAUSING VERY HARD DAMPING, AND COULD, IN A SEVERE CASE, CAUSE LOSS OF STEERINGCONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.

THE ONE-WAY VALVE IN THE STEERING DAMPERS IS USED TO CONTROL THE HYDRAULIC OIL FLOW SO THAT THE OIL VOLUME INSIDE THE STEERING DAMPER EXPANDS WITH TEMPERATURE.

THE VALVE SEAT CAN BECOME DEFORMED DURING USE, CAUSING UNCONTROLLED RESTRICTION OF THE OIL FLOW.

THE DEFORMED VALVE CAUSES THE INTERNAL PRESSURE ON THE DAMPER OILS SEALS TO INCREASE FROM INCREASED OIL TEMPERATURE AND VOLUME EXPANSION.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
