The short answer

NHTSA received BUS INDUSTRIES OF AMERICA’s report on Dec 14, 1993. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THE PASSENGERS MAY BE SUBJECTED TO INCREASED RISK OFINJURY IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURRS AND THE EMERGENCY EXIT CANNOT NOT BE USED.

THE LEFT HAND REARVIEW MIRROR CAN BE ADJUSTED TO A POSITION WHICH INTERFERES WITH THE OPENING OF THE EMERGENCY EXIT WINDOW LOCATED ADJACENT TO THE DRIVER POSITION.

IN SUCH CASES, THE VEHICLE IS IN NON-COMPLIANCE WITH FMVSS NO. 217, “BUS WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE.”

What should you do?

DEALERS WILL FIX THE LEFT REARVIEW MIRROR ARM IN A POSITION TO ALLOW A CLEAR PATH FOR THE EMERGENCY WINDOW TO EXTEND: THIS WILL OPERATE INDEPENDENT OF THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE MIRROR HEAD FOR DRIVER’S VISION.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
