What’s wrong with it?
IMPACT FRACTURES OF THE CROSS-TUBE ASSEMBLIES OF THESTEERABLE DRIVE AXLE CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.
THE HIGH STRENGTH -- LOW ALLOY MATERIAL WHICH WAS USED IN THE TURNBUCKLE STYLE CROSS-TUBE AXLE ASSEMBLIES HAS LOW IMPACT RESISTANCE PROPERTIES.
THE TURNBUCKLE STYLE CROSS-TUBE ASSEMBLIES ARE THEREFORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO FRACTURE UNDER IMPACT LOADS DUE TO THE COMPONENT’S DESIGN GEOMETRY AND THE LOW IMPACT RESISTANCE OF THE MATERIAL.

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
