The short answer

NHTSA received HYDRO FLAME CORP.’s report on Feb 12, 1993. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER DETERIORATION IS NOT DETECTEDAND CORRECTED, CHAMBER FLAME CAN PENETRATE THE CHAMBER AND THE FURNACE CASING,CAUSING A VEHICLE FIRE.

OVERHEATING AND PREMATURE DETERIORATION OF THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER CAN OCCUR IN MARGINAL OR POOR INSTALLATIONS OF THE FURNACE.

THE DETERIORATION IS CAUSED WHEN AIR CIRCULATION FROM THE FURNACE HOUSING IS RESTRICTED EITHER BY A LACK OF RETURN AIR CIRCULATION OR A DUCTING SYSTEM WHICH PREVENTS FREE CIRCULATION OF THE HEATED AIR FROM THE FURNACE.

What should you do?

INSPECT THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND TEST INSTALLATION OF THE FURNACE FOR SPECIFICATIONS. REWIRE THE OVERHEATING LIMIT SWITCH, WHICH CUTS THE FURNACE OFF WHEN THE HEAT EXCEEDS THE SPECIFIED LIMIT AND AUTOMATICALLY RESETS THE FURNACE TO A CONFIGURATION WHICH REQUIRES THE OPERATOR TO MANUALLY RESET THE FURNACE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
