NHTSA received HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTOR CO.’s report on Nov 12, 1992. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE SCREW USED TO MOUNT THE FRONT WHEEL BRAKE DISCSBREAKS, THE FRONT BRAKE WILL BE INOPERATIVE, INCREASING STOPPING DISTANCES WHICHMAY RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. BREAKAGE OF THE SCREWS FOR MOUNTING THE JIFFY STANDSPRING WILL CAUSE THE STAND TO EXTEND, WHICH MAY CAUSE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROLDURING A TURN. BREAKAGE OF THE SCREW THAT HOLDS THE FRONT WHEEL HUB CAP CANRESULT IN THE HUB CAP BEING HURLED OFF THE MOTORCYCLE INJURING PERSONS IN ITSPATH.

SCREWS (PART NUMBER 3655) USED TO MOUNT THE FRONT WHEEL BRAKE DISC, THE JIFFY STAND SPRING, AND FRONT WHEEL CAP, DO NOT MEET HARLEY- DAVIDSON’S STRENGTH REQUIREMENTS AND MAY BREAK DURING VEHICLE OPERATION.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
