The short answer

NHTSA received CHRYSLER CORPORATION’s report on Feb 11, 1992. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 26, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

THE ERROR IN THE OWNER’S MANUAL MAY LEAD A FRONT SEATPASSENGER TO MISTAKENLY OPEN THE CAR DOOR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION,BELIEVING THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE WOULD NOT OPEN IF THE DOOR WAS LOCKED. THISCOULD RESULT IN AN INJURY TO THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER.

THE OWNER’S MANUAL INCORRECTLY STATES THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR CANNOT BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE IF THE DOOR IS LOCKED UNTIL THE LOCK CONTROL HANDLE HAS BEEN PULLED UP.

ON THESE VEHICLES, THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR CAN BE OPENED BY THE INSIDE DOOR HANDLE EVEN IF THE DOOR IS LOCKED.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
