The short answer

NHTSA received GENERAL MOTORS CORP.’s report on Dec 13, 1991. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF THE FUEL SYSTEM IS NOT SEALED, THE AUTOMATIC SHUT-OFFSYSTEM USED IN GAS STATIONS WOULD NOT WORK, ALLOWING GAS TO BE FORCED OUT OFTHE DEFECTIVE RIGHT-HAND OPENING. THE SPILLED GASOLINE WOULD RESULT IN A FIREHAZARD IF EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.

SOME CHASSIS WERE SHIPPED TO BODY BUILDERS WITH DAMAGED FILL OR VENT OPENING CAPS ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE.

IF A LEFT-HAND FILL SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED ON THE TANK, AND THERE WAS A DAMAGED RIGHT-HAND CAP, THE FUEL SYSTEM WOULD NOT BE SEALED.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
