The short answer

NHTSA received OSHKOSH TRUCK CORPORATION’s report on Oct 27, 1991. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 26, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

CRACKS IN THE TIE ROD CAN RESULT IN SEPARATION OF THETIE ROD AND LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

THESE VEHICLES HAVE FRONT AXLES WITH BRAKE CAM OPERATION OPPOSITE TO THE ROTATION OF THE BRAKE DRUM (CAM OPPOSITE), AND THERE IS A TENDENCY FOR BRAKES TO CHATTER UNDER LOW AIR PRESSURE, RESULTING IN VIBRATIONS.

THE VIBRATIONS INDUCE STRESSES IN THE TIE ROD END BEYOND ITS ENDURANCE LIMIT, AND RESULT IN CRACKS IN THE THREADED PORTION OF THE STUD WHERE THE TUBE ENDS.

What should you do?

REPLACE THE CAM OPPOSITE BRAKE ACTUATION WITH CAM SAME BRAKE OPERATION, BY INTERCHANGING THE LEFT AND RIGHT CAM ASSEMBLIES TO AVOID BRAKE CHATTERING; AND REPLACE TIE RODS.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
