The short answer

NHTSA received NATIONAL COACH CORP.’s report on Feb 2, 1990. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 27, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

NONE. TO BRING THE VEHICLE INTO COMPLIANCE, THE WORDS ‘IN EMERGENCY’ WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE REAR DOOR LABEL.

THE REAR DOOR FAILED THE FMVSS 217 MAGNITUDE OF FORCE TEST.

THE REAR DOOR RELEASE MECHANISM REQUIRES 35 POUNDS OF FORCE TO OPERATE.

THIS IS GREATER THAN THE 20 POUNDS MAXIMUM ALLOWED BY THE FMVSS FOR DOORS LABELED ‘EMERGENCY EXIT’.

HOWEVER, THERE IS MORE UNOBSTRUCTED EXIT AREA THAN REQUIRED BY THE FMVSS, THEREFORE, THE REAR DOOR DOES NOT NEED TO BE LABELED AS AN EMERGENCY EXIT.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
