The short answer

NHTSA received WORLDWIDE TRADING CO, INC’s report on Apr 16, 1987. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

AS A RESULT OF THE ABOVE THE SURFACE OF THE LATCH ISSHORTENED AND, THEREFORE DOES NOT HAVE MAXIMUM SURFACE AREA WITH THE TONGUE.THIS COMBINATION OF BUCKLE AND LATCH MAY CAUSE THE BUCKLE TO RELEASE WITH LESSPULL THAN REQUIRED BY FMVSS 209 AND RESULT IN DAMAGE OR PERSONAL INJURY.

THE PRESS BUTTON IN THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY IS LONGER DUE TO WORN TOOLING THAT STAMPS OR PUNCHES THE METAL PARTS.

THE LONGER BUTTON CAUSES THE LATCH WHICH HOLDS THE TONGUE TO DEPRESS AND NOT MAKE FULL CONTACT WITH THE TONGUE.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
