The short answer

NHTSA received GRUMMAN ALLIED IND., INC.’s report on Nov 13, 1985. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

The notice gives no hazard in a field of its own.

THE ROUTING OF BRAKE LINES BROUGHT THE LINE CLOSE TO AN AREA USED TO FASTEN THE SEAT SOCKET SUPPORT STRUCTURE TO THE CHASSIS.

THE FASTENING OF SEAT SUPPORT IS DONE WITH BOLTS AND WHEN THE BOLTS ARE TIGHTENED THE FREE END OF THE BOLTS PINCHES ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES AGAINST THE CHASSIS FRAME RAIL.

THIS CAUSES A REDUCTION IN THE BRAKE LINE WHICH REDUCES THE VOLUME OF FLUID PASSING THROUGH THE LINE.

CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: THE REDUCED VOLUME OF FLUID AFFECTS THE EFFICIENCY OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM.

ALSO THE BRAKE LINE MAY CRACK CAUSING LOSS OF FLUID LINE .

IN EITHER CASE, A LONGER STOPPING DISTANCE WOULD BE REQUIRED WHEN MAXIMUM BRAKE EFFICIENCY IS NEEDED.

OPERATION OF A VEHICLE WITH DAMAGED BRAKES COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
