The short answer

NHTSA received MOTORCAR PARTS AND ACCESS’s report on Jan 29, 1985. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

The notice gives no hazard in a field of its own.

FLASHERS FAIL TO OPERATE IN THE FLASHING MODE, FAILURE TO MEET THE DURABILITY AND FAILURE TO MEET THE FLASH RATE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 108.

CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: THE DISCOVERED DEFECTS ARE IN PERFORMANCE OR DURABILITY RESULTING IN EITHER A FAILURE TO OPERATE OR A MALFUNCTION AFTER CONTINUED USAGE, EITHER OF WHICH COULD RESULT IN NO HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS.

THE DASHBOARD INDICATOR REFLECTS THE PERFORMANCE OF THE HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS WHICH WOULD GIVE WARNING OF MALFUNCTION TO THE VEHICLE OPERATOR.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
