The short answer

NHTSA received NATIONAL COACH CORP.’s report on Jun 25, 1981. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

The notice gives no hazard in a field of its own.

CHASSIS ON THE INVOLVED BUSES WERE LABELED INCORRECTLY WITH A GVWR OF 10,000 POUNDS THAT DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL REGULATION PART 567.4(G).

THIS STATES THAT THE GVWR SHOULD NOT BE LESS THAN THE SUM OF THE UNLOADED VEHICLE WEIGHT, RATED CARGO LOAD AND 150 POUNDS TIMES THE VEHICLE SEATING CAPACITY.

THE CERTIFICATION LABEL ALSO INCORRECTLY INDICATES THAT THE VEHICLE IS OF MULTIPURPOSE TYPE.

What should you do?

CERTIFICATION LABELS INDICATING TYPE OF VEHICLE AS A BUS WITH GVWR OF 11,000 POUNDS WILL BE AFFIXED IN PLACE OF THE OLD ONES. DECALS WILL ALSO BE AFFIXED IN THE PROPER LOCATIONS TO PROVIDE EXIT INSTRUCTIONS, AND THE CENTER REAR WINDOW WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW EXIT WINDOW.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
