The short answer

NHTSA received CRANE CARRIER COMPANY’s report on Jun 27, 1978. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 27, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

The notice gives no hazard in a field of its own.

THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM FAILS TO COMPLY TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 121, “AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS”.

MANUFACTURING TOLERANCES ON THE SWITCH CAN ALLOW THE WARNING BUZZER TO SOUND AT PRESSURES BELOW THE STANDARD 60 PSI.

THE STEERING WHEEL BLOCKS THE DRIVER”S FIELD OF VIEW OF THE WARNING LIGHT.

SOME OF THE TRUCKS REQUIRE .6 SECONDS, FOR THE AIR PRESSURE TO FALL FROM 95 PSI TO 5 PSI INSTEAD OF THE REQUIRED .55 SECONDS.

ALSO, ON SOME OF THESE VEHICLES, THE BRAKES WOULD NOT RELEASE AFTER LOSS OF AIR IN THE REAR BRAKE RESERVOIR BY MEANS OF THE SERVICE BRAKE CONTROL.

  • NHTSA’s part: Service brakes, air: antilock.

What should you do?

DEALER WILL INSTALL TWO LOW AIR PRESSURE SWITCHES TO ACTIVATE THE LOW AIR PRESSURE WARNING BUZZER AT A MINIMUM OF 60 PSI. AN AUDIBLE WARNING BUZZER WILL ALSO BE INSTALLED ON VEHICLES WHERE THE ANTI-LOCK WARNING LIGHT MIGHT BE OBSCURED BY THE STEERING WHEEL, AND VALVES AND FITTINGS WILL BE INSTALLED TO DECREASE THE TIME NECESSARY TO EXHAUST THE AIR FROM THE BRAKE CHAMBERS.

  • How to reach the firm: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRUCKS, HEAVY.SYSTEM: SERVICE BRAKES; ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM.CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: IF THE STEERING WHEEL BLOCKS THE DRIVER”S FIELD OF VIEWOF THE WARNING LIGHT, THE DRIVER WILL NOT BE WARNED IF THE BRAKES LOCK. What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
