The short answer

NHTSA received MOTOR COACH IND., INC.’s report on Oct 25, 1977. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 27, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

The notice gives no hazard in a field of its own.

THE INVOLVED VEHICLES DO NOT CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 121, “AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS”.

THE TWO “O” RINGS THAT ARE SUPPLIED ALONG WITH THE NEW SHUTTLE VALVES ARE OF A BUNA “V” QUALITY.

THESE RINGS ARE FULLY FUNCTIONAL IN NORMAL CLIMATE CONDITIONS, HOWEVER, IN EXTREMELY COLD ENVIRONMENTS, SLIGHT LEAKS MAY DEVELOP.

THIS VALVE ACTS AS A SEAL BETWEEN THE CYLINDER HEADS OF THE SHUTTLE VALVE AND THE PISTON.

IN TIME THIS SEAL MAY EXPAND OR “PUCKER UP”, MAKING IT POSSIBLE FOR THE SHUTTLE TO BECOME TRAPPED IN AN EMERGENCY BRAKING SITUATION.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
