The short answer

NHTSA received Waymo LLC’s report on May 1, 2026. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

Entering a flooded roadway can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Waymo LLC (Waymo) is recalling certain 5th and 6th Generation Automated Driving Systems (ADS).

The software may allow the vehicle to slow and then drive into standing water on higher speed roadways.

What should you do?

The remedy is currently under development. As an interim remedy, Waymo modified the scope of vehicle operations to increase weather-related constraints and updated the vehicle maps. All affected vehicles received the interim update by April 20, 2026.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
