The short answer

NHTSA received Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing’s report on Jan 23, 2026. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

Without the correct lights, it may be difficult for other road users to see the vehicle from the rear or side, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain rear combination light assemblies, with part numbers 81561-42290 and 81551-42290, sold as replacement parts for Toyota bZ4X vehicles.

The rear combination light assemblies may be equipped with a side marker reflector instead of a side marker light.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
