The short answer

NHTSA received Daimler Trucks North America, LLC’s report on Sep 28, 2022. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 25, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

Tie rod separation can result in a sudden loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Western Star 4700 and 2023 Western Star 4900, 49X, 6900, and Freightliner 114SD vehicles.

The tie rod clamps may have been improperly heat-treated, causing them to crack and allowing the tie rods to separate.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt. Owners’ complaints are counted on each vehicle’s page.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
