The short answer

NHTSA received Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s report on Feb 21, 2021. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 22, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

A sidewall failure may cause the tire to rapidly deflate, increasing the risk of a crash.

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.

(Cooper Tire) is recalling certain Cooper CS5 Grand Touring 225/55R17 and Mastercraft LSR Grand Touring 225/55R17 tires with DOT codes 2920 through 3220, 4220 through 4420 and 5120 through 0121.

The tires may have low tread gauge in the shoulder slot area which could cause tread separation and sidewall failure.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which tires, by their DOT codes: the range is in the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site, not in this file. Check the code on your tire’s sidewall against it.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
