The short answer

NHTSA received Vitro Automotriz, S.A. de C.V.’s report on Jul 31, 2019. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

In the event of a crash, larger glass pieces may strike the vehicle occupants, increasing the risk of injury.

Vitro Automotriz, S.A. de C.V.

(Vitro) is recalling certain various aftermarket replacement rear window glass (backlites), sold for use in various Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Isuzu, Oldsmobile, Buick, Saab, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, Volkswagen, Mazda, Mercury, Pontiac, Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Jeep, Navistar, International, Saturn, Scion, Cadillac, Lincoln, Infiniti, and Hyundai vehicles including passenger cars, pick-up trucks, SUV’s, and Heavy Duty vehicles.

For a full list of vehicles affected please see: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2019/RMISC-19E052-0438.pdf Due to improper tempering, in the event of a rear window glass breaking, the resulting fragments may not be small enough.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 205, “Glazing Materials.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
