The short answer

NHTSA received Fuel Helmets’s report on May 22, 2018. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

A helmet that fails to meet the safety requirements can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Fuel Helmets (Fuel) is recalling certain Open Face helmets, part number SH-OF0016 in size Large and SH-OF0017 in size Extra Large manufactured June 2015-April 2017.

The affected helmets may not adequately protect the wearer’s head in the event of an impact, and an object may penetrate the helmet.

As such, these helmets fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 218, “Motorcycle Helmets.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
