Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

If the jaws unexpectedly open, the fifth wheel trailer will not be secured to the tow vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Keystone Automotive Operations, Inc.

(Keystone) is recalling certain Husky Towing Products, fifth wheel trailer hitches, part numbers 31569/14-1706, and 31570/14-1707.

The fasteners in the fifth wheel trailer hitch may loosen, potentially causing the jaws to unexpectedly open or preventing the jaws from being able to be unlocked.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
