The short answer

NHTSA received New Flyer Industries Ltd.’s report on Aug 30, 2017. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

If the seat belt cannot be latched, the bus may be operated without the seat belt being used, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

New Flyer Industries Ltd.

(New Flyer) is recalling certain 2015-2016 MD30, 2016 MD35, 2017 XD35, XD60, XDE35, XDE40, XDE60, XN35 and 2016-2017 XD40 and XN40 transit buses, equipped with certain Recaro Commercial Bus Driver Seats (models Ergo R, Ergo D, AM71, AM72 and AM80).

The seat belt buckle may be stuck in the locked position, preventing the seat belt tongue from being able to be inserted and locked.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt. Owners’ complaints are counted on each vehicle’s page.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
