The short answer

NHTSA received Ferrara Fire Apparatus, Inc.’s report on Aug 4, 2016. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 19, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

If the power output cannot be changed, once the fire truck arrives at the scene, it may not be able to pump water to aid in extinguishing the fire, increasing the risk of injury.

Ferrara Fire Apparatus, Inc.

(Ferrara) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Inferno, Igniter, Intruder and Cinder fire trucks built on Freightliner and International chassis manufactured April 13, 2015, to May 30, 2016.

The affected vehicles may be equipped with certain C20 and C21 split-shaft transmissions from Waterous.

This transmission sends power to the wheels of an emergency response vehicle or powers an add-on unit such as a water pump used for fighting fires.

A component within the shift unit may be damaged and as a result, the operator may not be able to switch the power output.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt. Owners’ complaints are counted on each vehicle’s page.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
