The short answer

NHTSA received Heil Company’s report on Jul 11, 2016. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

If there is a delay of the spring brake application, the trailer may roll away after it has decoupled from the tractor, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Heil Company (Heil) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Petroleum, Crude, Dry Bulk and Flatbed trailers manufactured January 1, 2014, to June 18, 2016.

These trailers are equipped with certain Bendix SR5 spring brake valves which may have been improperly machined which could cause a delay of application of the spring brakes while parking.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt. Owners’ complaints are counted on each vehicle’s page.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
