The short answer

NHTSA received Champion Bus, Inc.’s report on May 12, 2016. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 19, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

In the event of a crash, the seat can separate from the base frame, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant.

Champion Bus, Inc.

(Champion) is recalling certain model year 2016 Champion Bus Challenger shuttle buses manufactured January 29, 2016, to April 4, 2016.

These vehicles are equipped with seats that may separate from the base frame due to bolt failure.

As such, these seats fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety System (FMVSS) number 222, “School Bus Passenger Seating and Crash Protection.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt. Owners’ complaints are counted on each vehicle’s page.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
