The short answer

NHTSA received American Grease Stick Company’s report on Mar 1, 2016. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

If a customer were confused by the label, they might use the wrong brake fluid, which could result in decreased braking performance and thereby increase the risk of a crash.

American Grease Stick Company (AGS) is recalling certain bottles of Carquest DOT5 Silicone Brake Fluid manufactured October 9, 2013, to September 15, 2015.

The affected bottles may not clearly show the minimum wet equilibrium reflux boiling point (ERPB) rating, and may not contain the words “Motor Vehicle” on the label where the bottle identifies the contents as DOT Brake Fluid.

As such, these bottles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 116, “Motor Vehicle Brake Fluids.”

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
