NHTSA received Strick Trailers, LLC’s report on Nov 23, 2015. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 24, 2026.
Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.
What’s wrong with it?
If the trailer is rear ended by a automobile, the guard may fail to prevent the automobile from traveling under the trailer, increasing the risk of injury to the driver of the automobile.
Strick Trailers, LLC (Strick) is recalling certain model year 1998-2005 Dry Freight Van Trailers manufactured April 19, 1998, to January 17, 2005 and equipped with rear impact guards that use gussets 46829 and 46830.
The rear impact guards may not be strong enough to prevent a vehicle from traveling under a trailer in the event of a crash.
As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 223, “Rear Impact Guards.”

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
- This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
