The short answer

NHTSA received SAF-Holland’s report on Oct 5, 2015. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 20, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

A wheel end that separates from the trailer axle increases the risk of a crash.

SAF-Holland is recalling certain 5-Inch Tapered Axles used in trailer applications, part numbers 24790175090, 24790745090, and 24790165090, manufactured December 13, 2011, to December 25, 2011.

In the affected axles, the wheel end may separate from the axle due to an out of specification material thickness on the spindle.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
