What’s wrong with it?
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passengers frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
Takata Corporation (Takata) has determined that certain model SPI, PSPI, and PSPI-L passenger frontal air bag inflators manufactured April 13, 2000, to July 31, 2004, and installed in vehicles originally sold, or currently registered, in areas of high absolute humidity, may be susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front passenger air bag.
Specifically, vehicles sold, or currently registered, in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S.
Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Florida and adjacent counties in southern Georgia, as well as the coastal areas of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, are susceptible to excessive internal pressure that could cause a rupture.

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Which ones, by part or lot: the recall’s report on NHTSA’s site gives them where the maker did; this file gives part numbers only where its maker listed them.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
