Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.
What’s wrong with it?
Without a system to control the engine speed, if airborne hydrocarbons (combustible vapors) enter through the air intake, excessive engine speed may result in a catastrophic engine failure and/or engine fire.
Mack Trucks, Inc.
(Mack) is recalling certain model year 2014 CXU tractor trailers manufactured June 21, 2013, through October 4, 2013 and equipped with an automatic over-speed protection system.
In the affected vehicles, the protection system, designed to monitor diesel engine speed and shutdown the engine should it rev excessively, may be wired incorrectly and may not operate as designed.

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
- This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
