The short answer

NHTSA received DAVIS EQUIPMENT CORPORATION’s report on Apr 6, 2012. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 28, 2026.

Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.

What’s wrong with it?

IF A REAR IMPACT OCCURRED, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE FOLLOWING VEHICLE WOULD IMPACT THE CONVEYOR BEFORE IMPACTING THE TRAILER’S BUMPER, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

DAVIS EQUIPMENT CORPORATION (DEC) IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2008-2011 MERRITT COMMODITY TRAILER 38’ GRAIN HOPPERS.

THE CONVEYOR BELT ON THESE VEHICLES EXTENDS OUT OF THE REAR OF THE TRAILER IN THE REAR IMPACT ZONE OF THE BACK WHEELS AND DOES NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR REAR IMPACT PROTECTION.

What the record doesn’t say

  • NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
  • Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
  • This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
  • How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
