NHTSA received DUCATI NORTH AMERICA’s report on Apr 21, 2011. Copied from NHTSA on Oct 23, 2026.
Every line below is in NHTSA’s own words, with its source beside it.
What’s wrong with it?
THE RIDER COULD EXPERIENCE THE INABILITY TO STEER INCREASING THE RISK OF LOW SPEED TIP-OVER OR COLLISION, THUS INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR INJURY TO THE RIDER.
DUCATI IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2010-2011 MULTISTRADA 1200, AND MODEL YEAR 2011, DIAVEL MOTORCYCLES.
THE ELECTRONIC STEERING LOCK MAY FAIL TO DISENGAGE DURING THE MOTORCYCLE “KEY-ON” PROCESS.
THIS HAS BEEN LINKED DIRECTLY TO A CERTAIN REVISION OF THE HANDS FREE DEVICE SOFTWARE.
IT COULD RESULT IN A SITUATION WHERE THE MOTORCYCLE’S ENGINE MIGHT START WHILE THE STEERING LOCK IS STILL ENGAGED.
A RIDER COULD START THE MOTORCYCLE AND ATTEMPT TO RIDE AWAY WHILE THE STEERING IS STILL LOCKED.

What the record doesn’t say
- NHTSA’s recall file doesn’t say whether anyone was hurt.
- Whether one vehicle or seat has been fixed: only its maker, or NHTSA’s lookup with a VIN, can say.
- This recall names only model years before 2015, which have no pages here. Your VIN, at NHTSA, says which recalls are open on a vehicle.
- How many have been returned or fixed isn’t in the notice.
